This was our last opportunity on this cover crop as it was growing too long to push through.
On day 2 our 3rd hammered in a row from this field was Ugly, hence the name of the field in the title.
Thankfully the heavy clay was wet enough to dig & with very few signals we gridded a massive area in 6 hours. We like to go fast & low, especially on unsearched non-site areas.

Early Jetton
Late Medieval Coin Weight
Broken Tudor Clothes Fastener
2 Hammered Pennies of Ed I (Notice the field stuck to it's theme)
What I'm going to call a 'Very Rare' 10th-11th C Anglo-Scandinavian (Viking) leather Mount with a Human Face (maybe a Warrior). It was once oval with 4 prong fixings on the reverse, I can't find a match & not seen anything quite like it. (although similar sized oval Urnes style Mounts exist & so do similar Viking Faces on other objects):icon_thumright::icon_thumright:

You pick the finest finds from the worst fields. This Viking mount is great! They had a truly unique style. I like it!

Great finds. I just have to say that I'm jealous that MD'ers in countries like England, Scotland, Germany, etc have so much older history to be detecting for. I lived in Greece for a year and would have loved to detect there, (my Greek friends were finding Alexander the Great coins in their olive groves). Unfortunately the artifact laws there are very strict and I couldn't search for anything.
Good hunting!

A nice group of "Ugly" finds. Congrats

I'm guessing you'll be back here after the crops are harvested and the field plowed?

The reason the hammered are ugly is because they do no ploughing, only use a power hoe (or whatever its called) & direct drilling.
It's not a crop its a wildlife bird & bee flower mix. Which is about 50% of their land (including the wild grasses) & the rest as crops.
We know where we have finished gridding & 1 day we will finish the whole field & never return to it, but it's very low on the list & may not get done for years.
