150 year old whiskey

Found this at an antique show this weekend. It's been too hot for me to detect recently so I filled the void by antiquing with my wife. The seller had "picked" it out of an Ohio barn this past week and I bought it for 25 bucks. He said he thought it was full of something " gold coins for all I know" is what he said. Walking away with it, it weighed about 30-40 pounds and I could feel the slosh of liquid if i stopped walking. Vinegar, oil, or whiskey I'm not opening whatever is inside but I guess it could possibly be some forgotten whiskey. Love old barn finds

If that's a 1 gallon jug and it weighs 30-40 pounds, the only "liquid" I can think of that would weigh that much would be Elemental Mercury metal... If that's the case then opening it might not be the best of ideas unless you have a good plan for it. Even having it around the house might allow it to leak mercury vapors which isn't ideal. It is a nice jug though!

Water weighs around 8lbs per gallon. I can't see the jug itself weighing more than 10 lbs. I know you are guessing. But before opening it. Check the weight with a bathroom scale. Like plumbata said. If it really is 30-40 lbs. be very careful

Hm. We'll didn't think of mercury but there's a chance I guess. The little black thing next to it in the picture is a zippo so I thought this might be a 2 gallon jug. 40 lbs is a bit much so I guess it's closer to 30. I carried it about a half mile so my perspective is skewed ha. A gallon of mercury would weigh 100 pounds so hopefully it's not a partially filled jug

One gallon of Mercury would weigh 113 lbs, so if the jug is 20% full maybe it would be Mercury.

Well it weighs roughly 28 pounds and I'm thinking it's relatively full by the way it "sloshes". I'm also skeptical that the ole timers would use corn cob stoppers for something like mercury or nitro. I dont know though so for the time being I put it on the porch lol

Before my dad died in 1975, I gave him a brown/tan jug of Platt Valley Moonshine (legal shine) and its about half full now...

Hummmm...that make it about 40 years + 8 years barrel time...and it's still good...

About 180 proof...

Hot damn...

Watch out because the farmer may have stored kerosene...maybe DMSO liniment in it...an you don't want to jerk around with either on your hands...

I'd test it on some plants in your yard first. If they grow 3 times their height overnight, well then you just go ahead & enjoy whatever is in that jug !!!
