1600's Seal & Baluster Spoon handle - fragment - found this morning.

I went out this morning with my four year-old son to a field that's produced two Spanish cobs (1690's) and many coppers over the years, but it's had seemed to thin out quite a bit lately. I hadn't found much at all for the first half-hour. I then suggested that my son lead the way, so it was follow the leader, a four year-old, right & left, this way and that way. Why not "Use the Force" of a four-year old no less? I was certainly having no luck. He led me to a far corner were I got a few musket balls, then this spoon handle fragment from the mid-17th Century. Plow fodder of course, but I've only found one other such handle fragment over the years, though I've dug bowls fragments with partial handles. I didn't get any coins, but I do like the real early stuff.

The whole specimen is from a UK website; it was found in an intertidal flat along the shore in England. I provided it for illustrative purposes only.

Good Hunting to All!

casper2.webp those broken seal tops were used as pipe tampers sometimes - the way yours is bent
Id say yours was definitely a "re-used" or "re-purposed" piece

Also known as a 'seal-top'.

Great finds, really nice seal. Could you post up a pic of the spoon piece? And good advice on the homing device, I think I will take my 3 year old grandson with me to my next field.

That is the spoon piece, not a seal, although some of the fansy ones are both.
