Hi all

Found this at a site where I've been digging all of the 1700s coins. Thought it was junk at first. Upon cleaning I can see 1683 through the loop. The reverse is blank. Any ideas what this is?

Gary

I believe what you have is a wick adjuster wheel from an oil lantern. Looks like it says Pat. Jan 1683. It's the oldest one I've seen before. Still a cool find.

I think we have a winner!! I tried and tried to read it but had to give up.

The ID is correct, but the date is not. It actually represents January 16, 1883. The first US patent wasn't issued until 1790 so it's obviously not 1683. Those style lamps weren't around in the 17th century either.
