So this year I upgraded to the Garrett atpro as an early birthday present. I took a swing in my backyard and I found a Rhode Island Navy Civil War button. Couldn't believe how quickly I found something I went to the side yard and dug up along one of our trails that date back to the 1700s. I pulled my first-ever silver out of the ground and long behold it was a 1718 reale. I couldn't believe it. Safe to say I fell in love with the AT PRO right away lol.

Judging by the size of the coin in your hand, I'd say you got yourself a 2 reale pistareen. Great find not many people can claim one of those as their first silver. In fact not many people have ever found one!

Awesome coin! If that coin is there I would say there are probably some colonial coppers. I would dig every signal in your yard. The coppers (would have been the small change for that coin) can ring up all over the place. The three that I have dug recently were not great signals and I dug them thinking they were most likely trash. Another coin theory is that the old silver coins sink deeper in the ground. If you get a different coil with more depth go over the yard again or detect after the ground has been soaked with rain. I've only found one Spanish silver it's a beat up half reale.

Hello Sheiswe,

I have the AT Pro & AT Gold detectors, both are great for coin shooting, relics and jewelry hunting. If you are in an open area with not much trash the larger 8.5" x 11" DD works very well. As you find yourself in moderate to slightly heavy trash the 5" x 8" DD works well. If you are in a cramped area, under or in brush or in heavy trash areas the 4.5" Super Sniper works very well...light and has a very small foot print. i believe is has a price of $ 110 dollars. If you search a lot of play ground areas you can get very close to the metallic support poles and fence area. What coils should I use for the AT Pro. I have the stock coil and the 5x8 coil

that will get you by just fine in most circumstances. Anything beyond that is getting into specialized situations. like getting a large coil for mild less trashy fields or already hunted spots cleared of most trash, so you can cover more ground and maybe squeek out a few deeper objects that have been missed. but you will lose target seperation with the large coil so it can't be used easily just anywhere.
