I am posting the pics for him since I have a better connection...

Maybe Nate (my father) will get in on this thread and tell the story of finding it...?

Here are the original pics, but the site they are on is probably maxed out for the next 10 years... Smaller versions are below:

Let me know is these links don't work, I am just too lazy to crop pics to post...

Link to what it would have looked like new:

Great Find,

I found a 1769 Irish half penny here in SC of all places. Neat things turn up in the strangest places !!!

Well, I found the coin more by luck than skill. As it happened it was the 1st target I dug, and all subsequent targets turned out to be junk: a memorial cent, part of a garden hose nozzle, and a square nail. The location, an old farm yard, should yield more artefacts to a diligent search but I did not have the time to do much MDing.

Per the historical data I've looked up, genuine halfpennies were far outnumbered by counterfeits. Hard to tell if this one is the real thing.

My thanks to my son for setting up our MD and for posting the photos.

About the coin's condition: I have to admit I got impatient to identify what I had found, and a little light scrubbing with a worn kitchen scrub pad & dish soap allowed that. Later, more light scrubbing with baking soda and a worn tooth brush followed by finger nail scraping and careful picking with a bamboo splint at especially tough dirt specks left the coin as you see it now.

I would not recommend my cleaning methods for any object considered to be valuable.

Great find! I have found one as well, but it didn't come out nearly as well as yours! I am still letting it soak in hopes that someday I can get a visible date out of it! Good luck and keep it up!
