Gave metal detecting another shot after finding a big flat button in the woods near my house. Found this coin that I think says 1775. After messing up the first button I found cleaning it I learned my lesson about taking care of the stuff i find so I gave the coin a hot peroxide treatment but it didn't clean up much. any other suggestions how to restore it? The picture is after the peroxide treatment i read about here.

Need help identifying a silver tooth shaped object with a X carved in it. Also Found a real old lock, a plate that says servant, a stirrup and concave button.

What kind of coin is it and is it worth anything?

Wow, Had no idea. Thanks for the info. The lock was found right next to the tag.

I forgot to include a picture of the tooth looking object with the x. What is it?

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button near my house.

Trust me, very excited. I think it's going in a frame on the wall just like it is. Have a feeling the value may go up with time. Sell it 40 years from now when I'm retired. I may be hooked here... I'm going to have to go buy a better detector. Thanks for the welcomes!

Any idea if the coin and lock are worth anything. And what the heck is the silver tooth looking thing with the X on it.

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button. Update: Slave Tag!

Not real sure either of them have much monetary value, mostly collector and personal value if that makes sense.

You will notice that most of the members on this site are collectors and are into treasure hunting for the thrill of the hunt rather than the monetary value of their finds. There is a thread on this forum called "What's it Worth" - post your finds there and someone should be able to help you with an estimated value.

It sounds like you have been bitten by the detecting bug, you realize it's all over now :D Check out this post

I guarantee you will catch yourself doing at least one of these things within a month.

Again, congratulations on a fantastic find and I can't wait to see what else you discover from that location.

PS, White's machines rock!!!!

One amazing day of digging!!!

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button. Update: Slave Tag!

Can you make out the date on the slave tag? Looks like 1846 to me, but you can tell better. Also is a makers mark visible on the bottom of the tag. These diamond shaped tags can fetch as high is 5000.00 and up. Congratulations!

Very nice finds. Usually where there is one tag there is more, especially if you think you are in a dump site. I would hunt that area slow and hard. I have been lucky enough to find 2. One in good shape and one kind of eat up....I know you are hooked now!. ;D

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button. Update: Slave Tag!

Wow! What a find! I would frame it too. Lots of conversation to be held around that piece.

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button. Update: Slave Tag!

That stirrup looks to be late 1700's vintage. I found a nice one myself last year and was able to ID it from a picture in a Revolutionary War era artifact book. (I'm not saying this is a War artifact...I'm just saying its from the era.) Here is a picture of the one I found and also a picture of the stirrup in the artifact book. Nice find

In case you're wondering what book this picture is from, its from the "Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia Of The American Revolution." and the picture is on page 157.

This is a similar 1846 slave tag that was sold in a group of 13 for $184,000 at the recent Julia Auction.
