Gave metal detecting another shot after finding a big flat button in the woods near my house. Found this coin that I think says 1775. After messing up the first button I found cleaning it I learned my lesson about taking care of the stuff i find so I gave the coin a hot peroxide treatment but it didn't clean up much. any other suggestions how to restore it? The picture is after the peroxide treatment i read about here.

Need help identifying a silver tooth shaped object with a X carved in it. Also Found a real old lock, a plate that says servant, a stirrup and concave button.

What kind of coin is it and is it worth anything?

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button near my house.

Congrats on your unique finds. If that is a slave tag then it could be worth some $$. I think they are pretty rare. I don't know much about colonial relics so you'll have to wait until the guys in the NE chime in about your finds. Thanks for sharing your pics. You'd better get back out there and do some more hunting.

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button near my house.

Oh My God!  That's a Slave Hire Tag!

DON'T try and bend it back--it should be Professionally done!  That is probably worth several thousand bucks.

And that copper coin is actually in really nice shape for a ground-found one.  Many old colonial coppers are unidentifiable due to wear/corrosion/etc.  So this is really a Great find!

WOW!  You just had yourself one Hell of a day!

Way to go! You seriously found a find of a lifetime! Like one of the other post said, don't bend or play with it, even if you get the urge to. Don't know how many times I've over cleaned or simply just destroyed relics by curiosity. Someone at this site should know the name of the gentleman who is known for restoring civil war artifacts, heard and seen good results from him.

I was just ready to ask if that was a slave tag!!! Iam still new to this stuff but I was quite sure it was a slave tag... Don't try an bend it back in shape.. if you get it done by a pro (trust me it's well worth the money your spending to get it done) you maybe able to pay off a small mortage with the money it's worth!!!

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button near my house.

The slave tag is a find of a lifetime. Have a professional bend it back for you. He will probably heat it. Be careful with that ...it's worth ALOT! The coin could be a counterfeit Machin Mills but I don't know.

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button near my house.

If that slave tag is worth a ton of $$ then leave it as is. Better to have one that is bent than to have one that is in two pieces.

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button near my house.

Sweet finds Cdiver!!!!!! been trying to find a slave tag for a while, not for the intristic value but for the history they hold. I've been looking for a conection down your way for a while now. I'm willing to drive if you'll allow me to go hunting with you. To me, relic hunting is what its all about. Finding a button, bullet, thimble, with a story to tell. Whatever it is i think finding things from the past is the coolest friggin thing since sliced bread. Any way let me know and I'll be down this weekend if you want.

Re: 1775 coin, charleston servant plate, old lock, button near my house.

Very nice finds. I'd be curious what the slave tag is worth. I think it has some good value but not paying off mortgages kind of value. Does anyone have any experience with selling these tags?

I'm sure Don from SJ will chime in and tell you exactly what your colonial coin is. He seems to be the resident expert here.

Looks like an Irish halfpenny. My buddy Steve found one Yesterday. Nice find.

A guy who goes by the name B.H. should know what that slave tag is worth. He has posted numerous ones on this forum that he and his wife have found.

Excellent saves especially the slave tag! The others are right. That tag is worth some serious bucks. Give Robert McDaniel a call at 256-767-6636. He does wonders with bent, near destroyed relics. Congrats!!

Well done Evo.. That is exactly what it is.
Irish Halfpenny
Although George III did not mint any royal British halfpence between 1775 and 1799 regal Irish coppers were produced in 1774-1776 and 1781-1782 and several found their way to America. This example is within the minimum 140 grain weight range for regal issues.
Thanks metalfinder but the only reason I knew is because you were able to ID the one my hunting partner found yesterday ;D I saw the crown and thought Rosa Americana but you were right on the money. Once again nice job on the Irish halfpenny cdiver!!
