Hello Tnetters! Hit a farm field with BrianW and Fernald1 on sunday and found my first Jersey Copper. She's pretty rough but I'll take it. I looked quickly at some of the charts, I'm guessing maris 48 but I'm probably wrong. Brian said Don in Jersey is the go to guy on Jersey Coppers so maybe he'll chime in.

HH and fill your holes.

Fog.

Don is definitely the man, and I am sure he will spot it! Until then, 48-g it is, congratulations!

Nice score on the nj copper. Haven't seen one of those in a while.

1787, wow, that's a loooooooong time ago! Maybe rough but certainly not toasted -- congrats on super find! :icon_flower::blob3::icon_flower: Andi

Congrats on your first.

Funny, I took a quick look at the coin and thought 48-g and then read the description. Although the obverse looks similar to a lot of other varieties the reverse jumps out. As the g reverse is only mated with the 48 and 51 obverse and the 51 obverse is a head facing left it took all of about 3/10ths of a second to figure this one out. Very common variety, but very nice find. Some coins come out great with cleaning. I think it would destroy this piece so I would leave it just as it is.

Now that's a cool old copper!, ya don't see too many of those pop up, nice work

As previously said, yes it is without a doubt a 1787 Maris 48-g variety. In my survey it is the second most common one found and if yours is from Mass, the 4th one reported in your state. Please PM me the state/county found in for my survey. Thanks. Don

Great super old Copper find there !!

Congrats on the Jersey copper. Great find!

Yup I agree Don, I brushed the dirt off with a soft bristled toothbrush and left it at that, after I looked at it with a loop I could see any other cleaning and I'd have a toasty copper.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Anytime you get a date and an ID on an old coin its a bonus....Being a state copper and one you haven't dug is awesome...Id be very happy with that one....I can't believe i missed it..I mean its only 250 acres lmao...Maybe next time

Thank you for sharing your hunt and those pictures with us
