Hi All,

Went out for a few hour hunt and came out with this. Found two large cents.
One is 1827 and the other? The small copper looks to be a 179? half cent. It is a right facing bust and I can (at the right angel) make out 17. Can someone please help with a way to see more detail. I know about the peroxide but, have soaked this coin in olive oil.

Thanks and HH,

Don

Re: 179? half cent

Nice saves! Looks like you had a fun hunt!

Re: 179? half cent

Nice finds, I suggest you go to the coinfacts.com site and compare the bust outlines between the Draped Bust and the Liberty Cap types, I believe it looks more like a Draped Bust Half Cent, which would not be a 17__. Always hard to say for sure from posted photos. Since you soaked it in Olive Oil, that is it for any further cleaning, the dirt is removed, and the coin is what it is.

Re: 179? half cent

Congrats on some nice finds! The site looks to be very wet from the amount of corrosion...what I would suggest to do with coins found in areas like that , it to just wash them with water and leave them....Oil sometimes will cause them to flake in that condition.....nicer coins react better to the oil, where the patina is still intact. Another suggestion that i can make is to do this.....for coins you dont see much detail and are already is very rough shape....you can buff it on a buffing wheel.....Example: I found a target that looked to be a large shotgun shell, it was late in the day and thought nothing of it....upon further examination, it looked to have a bust on it... I hit it with the buffing wheel and it brought back all kinds of detail that i could not see before......it turned out to be a Bust half cent ( see all the bust and the wreath detail on the reverse) it worked very well.....But only on slugs , you will be surprised how it works...... Great finds!!!! Congrats

That button with the harp and stars looks interesting. Can you post a better pic, especially if you were able to clean it any better? You might have a good Irish button there.

I think your right. I am ticked at myself for soaking the coin in olive oil. I have read your cleaning posts and others yet I still put it in it LOL. anyway on too the Irish button.

Steve, I have cleaned this button with mild soap and water. Is there more I should do or leave it alone. There is also a nice chunk of thread still attached.

No worries there, it wasn't going to be any better.

Button looks good as it is.

Thanks Iron. As mentioned above the soil is moist but, it is a sandy soil. I was thinking any coin that I pulled out of there would be in decent shape. Wrong!

Sweet Coppers. Hopefully you can get the rest of the date off that draped!
