Hi all what a great day to be out beeping with friends. The ground was a bit frosty when we got there but with the sun out and temps soon in the 40s off we went. Knowing that it was going to be a good day Seeker and Jeff and I decided to hit this 1790s town site that we’ve been hunting for about 2 years now.
A bit of History on the site. 300 immigrants from Germany first inhabited this site around 1790. The site actually was spread over several hundred acres. Very little of the site is accessible due to a large mining facility and an interstate highway and railway going through the site. Seeker is wrong about us being the first. I know of at least 2 others that have been detecting the area for over 10 years. We have been very lucky in that I am a good friend of the owners of about 40 acres of the site which is now a pasture. This site has produced over 60 coins mostly colonial era coppers and Seekers half dime. And over 150 buttons that Seeker and I found. This does not include the stuff found by others. I know that they have found comparable numbers of coins and artifacts.
Now for Yesterday. The day started off slow. We had plenty of signals but most were iron bits and square nails. Things soon picked up a bit and by 11:00 we all had some nice finds. My first was a nice 1805-draped bust cent. After a short break, Seeker pulled up 2 more large cents and was starting to gloat a bit. I couldn’t let him have all the fun so I just had to find my other 2 within about 50 ft of him. The 1848 was first and then the button and lastly the 1820 large cent.
Shortly after my battery pack died and I had to be content with following John and Jeff around and helping them dig. About 3:30 we decided to call it a day and stop and have a pop on the way home. While watching the game the bartender and locals started to tell us about another ghost town with about 90 foundations but that’s another story
Happy holidays keep warm and keep digging all
