Got out to the “hunted out” colonial site where I dug the 8 reale and the KGIII Half Penny years ago and got a few flat buttons and a thimble. Then, as the sun set and the dark was creeping in, I walked back to the car. On the way back right by the road I got a repeating 84 on my AT Pro and had my fingers crossed for another silver coin instead of a stupid modern penny. Popped the plug and had a little trouble finding it because it was such a big signal. Found the coin and wiped off the face and back but couldn’t make anything out on it. I knew it was old and it was a thick coin. Figured it was a large cent since it was so thick. Got home and started cleaning it when I saw the “1794” and knew I had something good. So here it is! 2019 has started off with a bang!

Any tips on getting the green crud off without damaging this coin? Thanks!

I’m probably just going to leave it as is. I got all the dirt off but don’t want to damage the patina. Wish I could get that green crud off but it’s on there pretty good. Thanks everybody! It was definitely a surprise for me haha. I’ve walked over that place a million times but this was right near where I park the truck.

She’s gorgeous

I would probably have that one professionally conserved , I think you have a high grade coin that is worthy of the expense . I don't think you should attempt a clean up at home on this coin. Very nice find !

Agree pay a pro, if it ends up coming off well this could be a high dollar coin. Also you don't know the variety with the crud on there.

Agreed. If I was going to go in any direction on that coin it would prob be by a “pro”. I don’t say this very often as they’re not exactly well versed in cleaning dug coins. But I know all about that crust as I deal with it here on the coast. I have termed in “coast crust”....I know I’m super clever lol. For some reason the Indian heads I find are sometimes entombed in this crust. The only way I’ve ever successfully removed it is in cold peroxide for weeks sometimes. This coin is obviously on a very different level and should be handled very carefully. Great find and good luck with whatever you decide to do. It is beautiful as is in my opinion. But I’m not a seller and care nothing about values so you always have to consider what’s best for you personally.

WOW! Awesome coin! Fantastic find! Congrats! :icon_thumleft:

That’s an exceptionally nice coin. Nicest one I recall seeing. Sure looks like a banner worthy piece of American history to me.

Congrats sir.

What an excellent find. The reverse side of that coin is in remarkable shape.

Get andres cleaning pencils, you can safely remove the thick crust, i have with many coins, great find also

That is a sweet save, big congrats.

I also say don't do anything more than a toothpick cleaning on it. If I can date it, I'm happy but that's me

Congrats - I say banner!

If I'm not mistaken, yours is the "head of '93" version. If not for the corrosion, it would be worth thousands in XF+ condition. My vote for banner is in! :icon_thumleft:

WOW! One of my dream finds!

I am greener than that copper right now! Great find... congrats!

A lot of my wheaties are crustier than that. What a beautiful coin!

Thanks everybody! I’m still shocked at this find. I went back today and found a few things.

I think the big piece is a part off of a flintlock musket? And the spur looks early to me.
Also took better pics of the coin!

Enjoy :)

That's in great shape too! :occasion14:

What a nice coin! The corrosion would kill me. With some serious patience and maybe months of soaking you might be able to get the Verdigris to lessen. I'm sure an expert on here could give you better advice. Congrats!
