Could not wait to get back to the old playground/field where I found the capped bust dime yesterday so I got up early and drove about an hour from home to get there. Still didn't have enough time to do this area thoroughly since I had to get back home, but right out of the car found a 1919 mercury dime. Not long after I dug deep to retrieve a good signal and came up with another large cent. After light dusting back home I think I've got a 1798:

This would make the first time in 16 years that I've got a legible date on a 1700's US coin, even though I have a couple large cents that are clearly Liberty Caps. I'm afraid to touch it any further, you know how sometimes you can lose a number on a flake! I would like to uncover the 17 but I think I'll leave it.

Tomorrow maybe I'll leave a little earlier :)
Thanks for looking,
Steve

Holy smokes congratulations I’m right there with you man I’ve ruined a lot of coins just trying to get the whole date when I already knew what it was. Again congratulations and it sounds like you got a great spot to hunt.

Congrats on digging a nice piece of US history. I have a love-hate relationship with coppers: I love finding them, but hate that they are usually slick or unidentifiable. Yours looks pretty good actually, and I'm glad you likely have a date. I'd be afraid to touch it too, if I were you. Good luck out there. You definitely have a great spot.

Congrats on the 1798 Draped Bust. I have dug lots of Draped Bust large cents over the years, but only three with 1700s dates that I could make out.

Good work there Cheffer. It's been a while since I pulled an 18th century DB. Always a thrill. Yeah I would not clean any further. I would put a coat of ren wax on it as is...dirt and all.

Congrats on the nice old copper! :icon_thumleft:

It's a 98 and I agree with you, I wouldn't touch it any further- more than likely do more bad than good- Congrats!

Really nice find. That’s in decent condition for a large cent that old and more detail than ones I have found. Plus it’s always great when you can make out the date. Congratulations!

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

colcoin2.webp I found mine a couple of months into the hobby last fall and have since sold it. The detail was great but the 1798 date was a weak part of the strike. Still looking for the Draped\Capped Bust silver.

Congrats. Gold coins and tree coins for me but not a single 1700s US coin:BangHead: Only one state coin too. Hard times after the revolution in my area I guess

Congrats on your 1798 Draped Bust large cent, I'm also looking for my first silver draped/capped coin

Great to get an old copper with a readable date. It seems that the new hunting spot is giving back nicely as well. Best of luck on the return hunt.

A big congrats on your first 1700's coin !

Congrats! My first 18th century US coin was also a 1798 Draped Bust large cent.

Sweet find...congrats!
