Hi fellow TNetters. This is my first post and I am already asking for assistance for a coin I dug last summer. Some people, huh?
Anyway, a little history on my request. I was introduced to this wonderful hobby by fellow members The Fog and BrianW a couple years ago. I can't thank them enough. I have been able to have a lot of fun and find a lot of great treasures of history because of them.
As far as the large cent goes, I love this coin! Not only because of the coin itself, but this is the first old coin I have found completely on my own. My very first site that I did all of the research etc.
I was wondering if anyone out there may know the variety of this coin? I have tried to do a little research on my own, but have found it extremely difficult and have no idea. The Fog told me I should post it on here for assistance, so I figured I would give it a shot. Thanks for looking!

Wow, that is OLD (By US standards), and in excellent condition considering it's likrly been in the ground for 200+ years. Paid off your detector, most likely (If you plan to sell it, I most certainly would not) worth at least EF-40, making it worth at least 1,000 dollars. A nice find indeed!

Thanks guys! I was super excited to pull this out of the ground! Definitely not going to sel!

I can't help with the variety ID, other than to say it's not one of the "8 over 7" varieties.... It sure is in superb condition!

Looking at it brings back great memories, as my first large cent was also a 1798...

Congrats on an awesome find!

Absolutely beautiful find ! I love that honest patina - pretty unusual condition for a dug cent .Welcome to T- net !

Thanks! I am on the cape and have found the soil to be kind to old coppers, but was really surprised at the condition of this coin.

WOW-- Congrats on a great coin

Style 2 Hair--has the extra curl!!

That coin is in great shape, sadly Central Maryland soil is hard on copper. Welcome to Tnet.I have just join here myself and think this app and the people on here are awesome.

What a beautiful coin!

Sweet that large cent is in great condition!

First glance.....S-179. Will have to look closer later but pretty sure. Hogge Although a VERY COMMON variety.....I would have to agree with a previous poster....that, as is.....a $1,000 coin

Thank you Hogge! I appreciate you taking the time to look and identify the coin.

Welcome and congrats! You were extremely lucky to find a LC in such beautiful condition! WTG! GL. HH!

I dont know a thing about large cent varieties but WOW what an absolutely beautiful find. Its hard enough to find a decent 1798 and then to find one like that?

Nice find and Hogge does have the variety correct, I disagree on the value, it does have environmental damage, especially the rim area where the patina is corroding away a bit, that knocks it down in value, no idea on what it would be other than not as high as stated, but still a very nice 1798, of which that year seemed to produce some quality coins.
