Relic Hunting
Thanks to a crazy spell of snow, frozen ground, then gobs of rain and muddy fields I was finally able to get back out to do some relic hunting back at the 1801 house. The yard was a mess and limited my hunt because I did not want to cause any un-wanted damage to the lawn with it being so wet and sloppy. I still managed some nice relics. The usual round balls and one minie this time. Got a real nice Cuff Eagle Button, a real nice Naval Eagle Button (I think 1860's??, if not let me know), 1864 IH, V Nickel, oil lamp piece, small colonial buckle, and a first for me...a PIN FIRE pistol bullet. That was the surprise to me for sure. More bad weather moving in for the next few days, but the long range forecast looks promising....mid to upper 60's

I've got to get back out, thanks for sharing!!!!! great finds

Nice finds Wes - I think the Navy is post war - what is the backmark? Congrats on the pinfire - I have found 1 in 20+ years and my dad as well. That is 2 from 50 years of digging.

Dan

Thank you for your comments Dan. I was very pleased to hear you have only found and seen two in 50 plus years. That makes me feel that my little PIN FIRE is truly a special CW find. The landowner will be pleased when I tell her this Thursday. Also, my naval button has no backmark as it is toasted and partially destroyed on the back. Everything I find leads it to the 1860's??? Any guess on a year?? Thanks again for your comments and assistance.

Honestly - I think it is most likely post 1900.

Its all about the buckle for me!

Sweet finds! :icon_thumleft: Was the 64 Indian copper-nickel or bronze?

a PIN FIRE

Always nice when people find pinfires! Yours appears, from my best guess from what I can deduct from the uncleaned specimen, to be made by Gevelot like about half of the ones I have. There was a link to my site earlier in the thread, but here is a link to some more information about the excavated ones. Excavated Pinfire Cartridges from American Civil War Battlefields and Encampments I have a 5 or 6 more that still need to be photographed including one from my state, Ohio!

What a great hunt,congrats!

Wow! You crushed me Dan. That is crazy how things get where they are. The site is pretty old (1710 with some parts earlier) It was is a iron infested area that has produced a lot of early 1800 relics with a few pieces from the late 1780's on. Bummer! Thanks Dan!
