I saw surprised at the mintages for 1802 - that CAN'T be right - there are way too many on Ebay - my friend found one - if it was that low it would be harder to find than a Pine tree Shilling...

Absolute banner find ! Congrats. Unbelievable condition.

Awesome early US copper in exceptional condition - I'll vote banner find with this find. You don't see too many Half Cents being found! Congrats

That is a heck of a statement, just what are you insinuating? That is like saying every rare find is so rare no one can find it????? My buddy finds a great banner worthy find and you make a statement like this, I just don't understand. I really would appreciate an explanation?

I think your mis-reading what he is saying

I saw (sp correction - was ?) surprised at the mintages for 1802 - that CAN'T be right - there are way too many on Ebay - my friend found one

he is just saying he does not think they are as rare as the book said.
it's not against any rules & not an insult.

as for the Numbers, there wern't as many people around back then so
lower number mintages still got lost

Sorry Guys, my roofer mentality and lack of education must be showing. I sometimes read into I guess what is not there. My apologies.

I misread on occasions too :laughing7:

You darn roofers are a ROUGH bunch :-) ha ha
I do it on occasion too, but no metal for me. If they're not archi's you can count me out. As for the low mintage you hardly ever see one dug. There are a few on ebay and there's big money being asked for most. Not to mention who knows how many are legit. My buddy owns a coin shop and I was shocked at just how many fake coins are out there that people are trying to sell. This coin would be worth faking due to value.
It's a crazy cool find and I love seeing other peoples success. Fun stuff and it gives us all hope when we see a rare one come out of the soil

I think it would be hard to counterfeit a Copper coin these days.
You could do it back then because you could mix them with your change
and they wouldn't stand out.

You can't add 200 years of age Toneing to copper overnight.

I believe That's why these days most counterfeiters stick to silver & gold.

One things for sure, If you dig it , it's at least old :laughing7:

anyway Before I forget the reason for this thread :tongue3:

Nice Half Cent George

Yes good point Jeff. He did say that it's usually the gold ones that people try to pass off. Some guy recently brought in about. $20,000 worth of gold coins he got in Africa for. $4000 and guess what. Well you know the rest :-)

Congrats on the 1802 Half Cent Vino, definitely a rare find! :occasion14:
I love how they 'made due' with the large Dandy Button after the shank broke!

Here's a pic of a similar button I found last year on at early 1800's home site.

Best of luck to you,
Dave

That's totally legit bud. Bottom line it's just an incredible find and whatever you decide to do with it is your prerogative. It's a good problem to have my friend :-)

Beautiful half cent, congratulations.

Sorry I did not chime in on this Thread earlier! I had just gotten back from Gold prospecting in North Carolina shortly after midnight, saw treblehunter's Thread post in the "Coins" forum about this coin and gave my' assessment of the coin there early Monday morning. I did not even know it was posted in "Today's Finds" until Monday evening.

While it seems that there are quite a few of these Variety Early Half Cents showing up on eBay and elsewhere, they are really more scarce than recent sales history would lead one to believe, especially for grades above Very Good and especially so before 2010. The pic posted by treblehunter from NGC's website is a good example of the majority of these Variety coins that are available and being offered for auction but there are many more of the Variety coins in much worse shape. Vino's coin (sorry Vino but I was so tired early Monday morning that I thought that the coin was treblehunter's find) although a dug metal detector find, is in much better condition than probably 90 percent or more of the specimens being offered. Although Vino's coin has some issues from being in the ground, it has quite a few things going for it when it comes to being collectible and sought after by EAC collectors and others. 1) The coin has at the least Very Fine details but possibly better details. 2) It is an Early Die State as Hogge noted with very few similar specimens. 3. It has a stronger strike than most of any of the specimens that have sold or are being offered. 4) If conserved, certified and graded and if it receives an actual grade, I could see the Graders giving the coin a grade bump due to it's scarcity/rarity as they have done with many of the graded specimens in the past (I say this because you can check out graded specimens and see that many of them are clearly not in as good condition as the grade given). Vino's coin is not only scarce to rare due to the Variety but also due to it's great condition for this Variety! I have included a link to the History of Sales of this Variety on NGC's website and also a link to Scarcecoins website, so that you can see what prices the 1802/0 Half Cent Cohen-2 Overdate Variety bring.

P.S. Although I voted Banner for this find in the "Coins" forum, I will do so here where it counts.

Thanks so mich Huntsman. ..Not sure were I fall in on the scale? ? I toke the coin over to this coin store today. THIS old man that told me his rotary phone is his Internet. .lol..He said if the coin didn't have a little bit of corrosion he would grade it in AU...What ever that means??? He also said the same thing as you they might not grade it?? Thanks George...

Congrats on a great rare early American copper. Sorry if someone already suggested this but that dandy button was most likely holed to be used for a whizzer toy. Awesome button!
