I got this in a lot from an auction.

The pipe has what I think are silver or pewter hallmarks and the date 1807 on the stem.

The pipe is a working pipe, afaik, with the hole going clear through the stem and into the bowl.

I have seen a similar one for sale at a show as original, but that doesn't really mean much.

1: Is it an 1807 pipe or a reproduction?
2: Is it silver or pewter or do the stamps mean something else (or are part of the faking)?

Thanks for any help.

I see a correct hudson Bay stamp, Hmmm.....

Googled and found one without a date by Hudson Bay "HB" sold for $425.00 hudson bay pipe.webp

Thats awesome!

Interesting piece. IMO, it's a fake. I always cringe when I see the HB mark and a date.
Plus it's in none of my books and the fact that a few are showing up sends alarm signals, as such a piece should be rare or unique.
I don't know whether such a pipe ever existed or if this is a fantasy piece.
Once again, this is just my opinion.
When it comes to fur trade items, currently there are MORE fakes and fantasy pieces on the market than the real deals!
Hopefully you didn't pay too much but regardless, it's still a neat pipe.
Cheers,
Dave.

I've seen no documentation on any pipe of that sort related to trade all the way back to the 1500's kaolin yes.

Thanks guys. It came in a lot with many other pieces. I was figuring it was a fake or a tourist piece/repro since it was not separated out on its own for the auction (and I got the whole lot for >$50). But there were some Civil War and late 1800s bits in the lot and the pipe was not pictured so it made me doubt my first impression. And then I saw a near identical one at a firearm show for north of $200 which made me think it was more likely fake, and more likely real all at the same time. Funny how the brain works. Since I could not find any thing on the net using my Google-fu I decided I needed to ask some actual people.
Thanks again!

Maybe I'll stick it on E-bay as a repro and see what I get.
lrgcent, do you have the link to the e-bay auction? I can't find it.

Not ebay but here it is, just Google Beaver trade pipe and click images.......Anything is worth what anyone will pay, even if its a repo, just ask an reenactor!
