What a way to end the day! 11 degrees when I got to the 2 cellars on private property I received permission to hunt. went there in the fall and the 1st site was and still is overgrown with vines and briars. 2nd site gave up some buttons and a knee buckle last time. decided to go back to both sites today. the clear site gave up a cool cast brass little buckle a few buttons, broken shoe buckle pieces and a cast brass face thing?
headed back to the overgrown site on way back to car with a 1/2 hour left of daylight and fought my way around the cellar. got a clad qtr a cool little buckle with a guy and his dog. and last signal i thought was gonna be a copper. Dug down and out pops a New York Militia Eagle belt plate. Amazing to see that come out of the ground! I had a friend look in the American Military Belt Plate book It's not in that one or any military belt plate book.
Can anyone help me with this? Is it a rare buckle?

Thanks! It may be the only one known from what I am hearing so far. I spoke with Mike O'Donnell today on the phone and He said he's never heard of the one I found. He will look at the pics in a e-mail I sent him and get back to me on it. He had a stroke last year and is still recovering. He wants to do an updated book on new discoveries and mine may very well be in it if and when it is published. He said may be a few years before he can get it done.

Spectacular find Dave. Bet that blew your ears off.
thanks Roger, actually it was about 6 inches deep and a solid 83 VDI was expecting a copper of a ox knob.

Amazing finds! :notworthy:

AMAZINGGGGG belt plate! Congrats!

I wonder if it was worn with the NY militia button in my Avatar?

A fantastic specimen Dave!! I've said it before, and again... I'd love to hunt with you someday.

could have been. I'm still waiting to hear from West Point on the rarity of this buckle.only one ever seen so far. I've gotten offers from many people who want to buy it. $500, $700, $800 & $1,000 so far.

How do you put a price on a one of a kind item? Not likely to be more of them surfacing either. It should bring as much as the highest valued period buckle has brought in the past. I'd have a hard time parting with that one.

Hang on to it Dave until someone offers you a stupid price and you just can't say no.

Well, an unlisted militia plate is quite a find Dave. I think you have the period nailed down by the style and design, but I’ve never seen a design quite like that one. Unbelievable and you nailed a banner find -
