1820 Large Cent. ( My First )

Hello all,,,
I went back to the cache site for about an hour today. Found my first large cent. It's an 1820 Matron Head, I think, the last digit is pretty hard to see. Seems the area around the date is in the worst shape of any of the rest. You can clearly see the "LIBERTY" across the headband...

Very nice. Did you clean it at all? Or did it come out of the ground with the patina coming off? HH,

Hey Donny,,, I have only rinsed it in water, no scrubbing... I think I got there a few years too late to see more of the pretty green stuff. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it looks as though there was once a nice patina there, but the coin had started deteriorating and lost what patina it had....

I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it looks as though there was once a nice patina there, but the coin had started deteriorating and lost what patina it had....

That sucks. The reason I asked was mine had a patina on it and I just scrubbed it lightly and when the patina came off so did the details. It was a hard lesson for me in coin preservation. You can see the coin in Best Finds http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,97489.0.html after it was cleaned and there is a link in the post that has a picture of how it looked when it was dug. Still nice to find a large cent in any condition. HH,
