I found this Spanish 8 Reale a couple weeks ago in a colonial farm field. This place has a lot of history. One of my digging partners just obtained permission to hunt this property about 3 weeks ago. There are tons of modern bullets in these fields. Except for a few flat buttons we were not finding much in this particular field. I was using the XP Deus 2 when I got a high tone. I never expected or thought I would find an 8 Reale. So I was a little shocked.

great find. Sure you weren't expecting to find that in PA. Was there ever a Spanish presence there?

I don’t think there was a Spanish presence there.

When one expects the last possible thing, something great shows up.
That's a great looking big silver. Congratulations

I am sure others here will chime in as well ... "Spanish" colonial coins (in this case Potosi) were legal tender in the US until 1857. these coins were the US dollar of their day, being the world's currency for 300 odd years or so.

Adding to unclemac's.....

The Spanish silver dollar had been the world's outstanding coin since the early 16th century and was spread partially by dint of the vast silver output of the Spanish colonies in Latin America. More important, however, was that the Spanish dollar, from the 16th to the 19th century, was relatively the most stable and least debased coin in the Western world.
