I had hunted this site for MANY hours before now. It is the house I grew up in and when I visit my parents I almost always spend some time detecting. I have found a number of old relics there ..buttons, buckles and old tools. Not much in the way of coins though. I did find an 1830s hard times token and other then that my next oldest was an 1892 Indian. But I knew there had to be a large cent there somewhere! ;D

I had been avoiding the dog yard area because it is still in active use :D and a bit of a minefield. But yesterday I wandered in and almost right away hit a corroded 1884 Indian at the edge of the garden. I had to leave but went back today and right in front of the the house I had for my geese when I was young I hit it. It was down deep but the signal stayed good and it makes all the hours worthwhile! :hello2: I love it more since I must have walked over that spot a thousand times growing up. So cool! ;D

Anyway .. here it is before and after cleaning (didn't see the small hole at first but I still love the coin!) along with some other items I have found at the site over the last few hunts there.

My 4th large cent this year - and ever!

Thanks for looking!

Very nice finds, Bramble!

I guess **** is where you find it ????

Heyyyyyy!
That's a collectible vintage 4-h pin from the 1930's . '

What is the purpose of achievement pins, in general?
The purpose of achievement pins is to reward 4-H members (Kids) for successful completion of 4-H work....or play whatever . :D
The first 4-H camp was held in Randolph County, West Virginia. Originally, these camps were for what was referred to as "Corn Clubs". Campers slept in corn fields, in tents, only to wake up and work almost the entirety of each day. Back then!

Great find!

Excellent Mike! Thanks so much for the info! I found that pin a few days ago and considered posting it then and I thought then that you would likely know more about it. :icon_thumleft:

I was wondering what does the "First" mean in "First NY"?

Simply, first 4-h work completed.
Whether it be in Bee keeping, sewing, fishing...Etc.... LOL An award.

To make kids feel special.

Just like Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts etc..

4-H membership hit an all-time high in 1974 as a result of its popular educational program about nutrition, Mulligan Stew, shown in schools and on television across the country.

Yes, it's a keeper.

I find them here occasionally and they are always a welcomed treasure.

I give them to the International staff to take home with them.. As a token of appreciation.

Amazing what those dogs lose in their yards ! Argentium.

Congrats on the 4H Pin and the Large Cent, LOL, I hunted the yard I grew up in and found nothing, and dang, I know I lost coins there when I was a kid and it would have been silver too! You did a nice job on that Large Cent, cleaned up well. Looks like it might be a Newcomb 8 variety.

Thanks Don! I think I made that coin appear by sheer will :laughing7:

Do you have more info about the Newcomb 8? I did a quick google and I just saw it may be "scarce"?

Is that LC struck with a rotated die?
I'm not a coin expert but the location of the hole is off, I'm I right or am I wrong?
maybe someone with knowledge of this might chime in....

Nice finds

nice finds!!!! MR TUFF

congrats on the matron head! wish they all came out like that

Thanks everyone for all the nice responses! Of course now that I finally proved there was a large cent there I find I have the urge to prove there are two :laughing7: I'll probably give it another shot tomorrow. I hope I get to post again ;D

Congrats on the large cent. It took me more than 30 years of hunting to find mine. I felt like they were out there, but I couldn't bring one home. I finally dug one at an old home stead site in the middle of a bean field. It was deep, dirty but beautiful to me. Mine has a hold drilled right through the center. I was told they drilled them to string them so they wouldn't be lost. Nice job on cleaning yours up.

Nice LC !! Are all the Matrons rotated? I just looked at my 1820, and it appears to be 35 degrees off, It appears that yours is off too.
