Not sure if this is my best find but it sure ranks close to the top.
I found this two weeks ago on an Indian village site in Kansas within a few miles of the Santa Fe trail.
It is an 1833 Dragoon Cap Plate that was worn on an enlisted Dragoon soldier's dress cap. These were in use from 1833 to 1851. The Dragoons traveled along the Santa Fe and Oregon trails to keep peace between Indians and people traveling the trails. Not sure how it ended up in this village but I have a couple of ideas. I have found numerous Dragoon buttons and Mounted Rifle buttons on this site but this was the first military insignia.
