1835 Large Cent and a Big Heart

I detected a former homesite in the woods a few days ago. I managed to dig an 1835 Large Cent along the edge of the cellar hole. I found it using a small coil after apparently missing it with the standard coil on prior searches. The reverse required little cleaning, while the obverse was covered with a stubborn layer of hardened dirt. I also found a couple buttons and a large, thin, heart-shaped object, which appears to be made of brass. I believe it is a small garden hoe, though I am not sure. If anyone has an idea of what it is and perhaps how old, I would love to hear it. Thanks and good luck out there.

Thanks! I followed up on your idea and found some horse brass items similar to my object. Horse brass does make more sense than a hoe, as I don’t think I typically find brass tools. Thanks for the feedback and likely ID.

There are several variations of the 1835 large cent. Your is “the head of 1836”.

Congrats on the nice looking LC and the piece of horse brass.
Based on the design and construction, this is a martingale heart (or horse harness plate) that most likely dates to the mid-19th century, specifically from the 1850s to the 1860s

Way to go fellow Mass hunter! Your LC cleaned up very nicely. Great looking coin. You were smart for trying out the smaller coil in that spot. You never know what might be hiding, especially if there is a lot of iron in the ground. Congrats!

Thanks for the info. That date range iis generally consistent with my other finds and the age of this site. I am going to hang it in my shed with my old dug horse shoes.

Way to go fellow Mass hunter! Your LC cleaned up very nicely. Great looking coin. You were smart for trying out the smaller coil in that spot. You never know what might be hiding, especially if there is a lot of iron in the ground. Congrats!

Thanks! The small coil definitely helps in the trashy or tight areas, and near foundations.. As for cleaning, I have had mixed luck with the Andre’s pencils, but they were a lifesaver on this one and worked great. Peroxide is easier/quicker, but that seems to darken coppers (at least it has for me).

Nice! Those are much smaller than mine though. They sort of remind me of the small shields I have found that go on harness straps (can’t remember their name). Perhaps my horse brass is for a different purpose than the ones in your photo 🤔?
