Well I made it back to my favorite spot and decided to dig some iron. Well this nice 1836 Capped bust was sitting under a large iron spike. This is my oldest US silver and it is in great except I hit it. I am soo disappointed. I'm not sure was anything I could do about it with the coins position and the iron nail. The other finds include a cool 1907 watch fob and a ton of iron. i know there is another one of these coins there somewhere now i just gotta keep lookingThanks for looking Ynp

Beauty! Still looking for my 1st. Congrats.........Hogge

Nice finds! Congrats and HH!

Unless you found it in water, why is it black? Sure it's not a counterfeit? Sure doesn't look like silver to me (I thought it was a large cent when I first saw it)--but maybe it's your pics.

Wow! Great digs!

Where did you hit it ?, I'm not seeing it - looks to be in great shape - I too am a little surprised at how black it is - but that's not
unheard of for .900 or .925 for that matter . There sure are a lot of nice "cappies" being found in the last few days !

I thought counterfeit too. But a lot of old silver around me comes out looking like that. Plus the part I hit sure is shiny

With some better pic's that would look good on the banner ! You dont see capped bust quarter's found to often.I just voted banner !

Try brushing it down with some water and baking soda, if it doesn't turn silver it's gotta be a counterfeit. i have never seen silver look like that other than 1/2 reals possibly, and this is not as old. Nice find tho.

While this may not be the look we are acustomed to, trust me - silver can go rather blackish , the 10% copper alloy in coin silver
is plenty reactive - we see this all the time with beach silvers , just not as often with inland digs .
since the coin is in a higher grade/condition , I strongly suggest you don't clean it - I wouldn't touch it .

The book says they should weigh 6.7 penny weights she weighs 6.6 penny weights. This is not a coin I will clean.

I dug a 1917s Merc at a salt water beach that looked similar in color to yours. I'd say it definitely depends on ground conditions, but get it looked at for sure. Such a great find!

Oh, damn, it really sucks when you hit an old coin, but it happens. Hey, you at least found it and have bragging rights on it, congrats!!!

Is this the week of the capped bust? Never seen so many posted before.

I missed this post last week. I'd be thrilled with any Capped Bust 25c.

Excellent find! Shame you hit but it's still a great looking coin. Silver oxidizes black. Had black Rosies & Washington quarters several times even. Depends on the type of soil-how it drains and what leeches in with the rain. Had a few Mercs that looked like they were dipped in acid near Phila. Also some good lustrous coins.
I wouldn't clean a coin like that.

Thanks for all the replies. It is amazing to think in 1836 a quarter would be worth about 10 dollars or more today. I'm sure there is another one of these bad girls hiding in there just got to dig some more trash.
