1840s U.S. Ordnance Coat Button, Field-Made Hat Plate, & Other Campsite Finds

Here's the result of this weekend's digs at a couple sites including a new campsite. Dug what I believe is an awesome field-made hat plate. If you look at the close-up, you

can see where the person put the rivets into the metal to hold it to a leather strap. Also found some nice buttons but also a NASTY Eagle that was all caved in :P :P ;D

 Themosquitos were out in FULL FORCE today and nearly drove us out of there if it hadn't have been for our die hard determination to dig, they MIGHT had.....

Here's the pics of everything:

-1830s-1840s U.S. Ordnance Coat Button
-Field Made Hat Plate

Nice digs as usual!!! Great Ord button!! What does the back of the "22" look like?? Reminds me of the date markers they drive into railroad ties.. at least tht is what I was told they were for...

Thanks MonkeyBoy. As for that "22" button, I wasn't sure about it from the get-go that's why I told Dman that I wasn't sure yet what it was or what the "22" refered to. The back just looks like a spot on it where

a shank would've went but I can definitely see it being a marker for something as you said. :icon_thumleft:

You have really been tearing it up this year Josh. Congrats on more great finds!

Regarding the eagle button with the blank shield, Warren Tice states in his book (page 142) that a few General Service buttons made during the 1840s and 1850s have blank shields. I found a couple of them this past March at an 1850s site in West Texas. I spoke to William Leigh about them at the last DIV. He called them "rare, but under appreciated". Here are the ones I found....

Thanks Steve :icon_thumleft:  and thanks also for the info on the Eagle button. I had heard of guys finding them but this is the first one I've ever found. I use to have the Tice book but I lent it to a friend who moved away :-\ you know how that goes. Those are some pretty nice examples you have there
