The first thing I saw was the date, 1855, then I saw the price, $5.00. I asked the guy in the shop if I could see it, then I saw it had what I thought to be gashes all over it. I was also buying some other junk silver coins, so I said what the heck and bought it. I didn't look at it until I got home, then I noticed the extra piece of copper on her ear. I googled it and came to the conclusion that I had an 1855 slant 5 knob on ear large cent with slice marks all over it, but now that I look at it closer the slashes on the coin are not indented it, but slightly raised. the only thing I could think of that would cause this sort of damage were die cracks, but there is so many. anyway, if anybody knows anything about this coin please chime in because I am sort of confused. if I got a real 1855 knob on ear large cent for 5 bucks, I think that's a good score, but I still don't know what all of the marks are on the coin

The scratches could have just been a kid with a pocket knife. Who knows...? Nice score on the 5 buck knob ear, though.

Welcome to Tnet! It's too hard to give a conclusion by using a photograph. A coin like that would have to be inspected in person under proper magnification. I'd take it to a coin show and get many opinions from it's members.

That is what I thought but most of the 'cuts' go outward almost like it was minted that way, although I think you are probably right. next time I go to a show ill take it with me and see what people have to say about it. Thanks
