1861 Fatty, relics, and a turtle surprise!

Findings are slim nowadays, as I am nearly out of spots and must work up the nerve to seek new permissions. However, I did manage to find an 1861 Indian Head penny and a few relics today at a former homesite in the woods. The ox shoe was a surface find, presumably left behind intentionally by a prior detectorist. The turtle was an unexpected surprise. I believe it is a male Eastern Box Turtle, though I did not inspect his junk to be sure 😁. (Just kidding, as I think the eyes are generally used as the gender clue.) They may be somewhat rare around this part of New England. Good luck and happy hunting!

Thanks! Yes … the soil was a fine sand, almost powdery grey. I have never detected in soil like that, and most Indian Head pennies I have found have had a hardened layer of crust on them. The Fatties can be delicate, so I am going to leave this one alone.

You’re correct about the turtle. Male’s eyes are red or orange. Females more of a brown

Thanks! I think that is the first turtle of that type I have ever seen around here. It seemed so out of place in the woods far from any water source that I could see. Beautiful little creature though.

I don’t see any design or lettering. The button has a silvery shine to it under the hardened crust, like a tombac. I need to clean it some more.

That is a land turtle you saw, we call them Boxer turtles ,they can literally go in their shell and seal it shut.. good looking picture you got of him..they don't go in Water though,the boxer turtles are strictly a land beast

That’s a box turtle. They don’t live in the water. They pretty animals……until they get in the garden and take 1 bite out of everything at their level.

I like the clog clasp with the memorial that some attribute to Washington's death in 1799. I found the same one on my land.

Thanks for the info. I often see Painted Turtles and sometimes a Snapping Turtle; however, they are almost always near the water. I guess I didn’t realize that some turtles aren’t so dependent on being near a water resource. I believe these Box Turtles are on a species of concern list in Massachusetts, as they may be somewhat endangered in this area..

Thanks for the ID! You have a keen eye and are obviously very knowledgeable. I GOOGLED clog clasp and, sure enough, that’s what this looks like. I had no idea and just thought it was a broken pin. The design does look like an urn, so perhaps it is some sort of memorial. Do you have a picture of yours and/or a link to info on that Washington-related speculation? Very interesting to me.
