1862 1/2 Dime 'Love Token' earring...

I found this 'love token' earring in my mother's things. Looked it up as I was amazing at the fact that an earring had been made from an 1862 1/2 dime, but apparently it isn't uncommon. And value seems to be connected to the design etched onto the piece. The coin side, obviously on the inside, is very hard to photograph, but I did my best. It's a lovely piece, and I'm very curious as to the value. Yakker

That is pretty cool. I'd love to dig one of those one day at the old home sites I hunt.

Nice piece! Since the collectibile and intrinsic value of the coin has been destroyed, you are left with the value of the Silver that the coin contains and/or the collectibility of it as a "Love Token" piece. There are quite a few folks out there that collect Love Tokens and will pay a premium over it's Silver content value.

Thanks Frank. I knew it was going to be an issue of whether someone liked the etched design+ melt value. What I wasn't sure of was whether the actual date on the coin made any difference at all- knowing that it's a ruined coin. Thanks for the info:thumbsup:

Wow,

Really cool piece. 8-) People are mostly right about the value. :icon_scratch: If its period carved its worth maybe 2x -3x melt. When is the carving from?? I have no Idea... :dontknow: I want to say 1890's - 1920's
Again very cool piece, awesome to find anywhere !! :headbang:
