I have a copy of a hand-drawn map from 1874 that shows the general area where a cabin existed in the hills. The cabin was mentioned again in an 1897 newspaper article about a man fleeing a murder scene (he visited the cabin and chatted with its occupants before disappearing forever into the nearby canyon). A 1906 Sunset Magazine article by a local naturalist mentions "a vaquero's rustic cabin 2 or 3 rods from the intersecting creeks." After that, there's no indication it ever existed.

The area is fairly remote and so far I've had no luck finding the exact location. Yesterday, however, I found this dime on the path leading to where I think the cabin might have been situated. I feel like I'm getting close but, even if I never find it, at least I scored my oldest coin . . . and first seated liberty!

Thanks for looking!

Awesome story and beautiful coin! Congratulations on your first seated! I'll never forget mine that's for sure! Now get out there and find that cabin! Lol like you said tho even if you never do you still recovered an awesome piece of history.

Great story and a beautiful coin. Whenever I am looking for a lost Homesite I always look for the water source usually no matter how little sign of the cabin there was there will still be remnants of the spring.

The water source is almost always still there.

Sweet find That's the ticket

Good call. I took this picture near the site. If I lived here 150 years ago I would have gathered water, bathed, done laundry, etc. in this mini oasis. I scanned all around the banks and didn't get the slightest beep!

Congratualtions on the seated silver! :occasion14:

Great coin, that kind of find will make your day every time.

Congrats on your first seated! Love the research and the clues you're going on to get you there. Good luck and I hope you find that spot soon!

Congratz on your first Seated Liberty! That was a enjoyable read and good job on your research. I hope you find the cabin location soon! Good Luck!

If nothing else all that research got you this sweet dime! Still on my wishlist.

Beautiful coin. Congrats!

Excellent find. In super shape. 2 or 3 rods should be 30 to 50 feet. Maybe on uphill (high) side. Hope you find a kettle of
gold coins. Good Luck

Guardez
