1870's cast horse hoof whistle. Who knew?

You just never know the the unique things you will find in this hobby! This one was fun to research. It's a cast horse hoof whistle from circa 1870's. Made of "nickel silver" aka "German silver" and rang up as a 16 on the Nox 800. This example was manufactured by Thomas Yates in Birmingham, England. He sold these whistles in his popular catalogues in the late 19th century, and they were apparently quite popular among the sporting crowd back in the day. You could wear it around your neck, and it was also a dual purpose pipe tamper. After a little cleaning it whistles as loud and clear as ever!

Wwas it used in hunting? The combination of a horse hoof and a whistle has to have a connection to something. Most horseman do not use whistles.

Yes I believe hunters would use whistles to give commands to the hunting dogs.
