1870s Protestant Woman's Home - 3 Silvers - Two Firsts - Best Dig so Far

I recently scored permission to hunt this place.

This place is old and only a few blocks from my house. The grounds have changed a bit due to a massive addition, but much of the rear of the building is very old, finding spots to detect is tough though because of the addition of a huge asphalt parking lot. I stuck to the big trees in the grass on the outside of the parking lot, I started off with a few wheaties and some modern clad... Then came my first silver of the day, a 1958 Rosie...

The temperature fell quickly this morning, but I knew I needed to stay out as long as I could because this might be the last time I get to detect for a while now that a cold snap is imminent. So I throw everything in my car and start heading out of the lot. Imwas driving out of the lot and I decided to pull over by the front gate and swing around one of the massive oak trees before I left. When I got around the backside of the tree I noticed what looked like the top of a planting pot, stoneware-ish with some gloss remaining on the edges of the rim. I swept over it and got a huge signal, it was weird though because the signal rang almost a foot away from the pot with almost the same pitch and strength.

So I got down and to my surprise the pot had maybe two inches of dirt, and the rest was filled with sand... I dug down to the bottom, couldn't really see anything but when I stuck my pinpointer in it gave a signal. So I took my glove off and stuck my hand in and pulled out my first half dollar - a 1943 walking Liberty. I was freaking out, but also freezing and wanted to get home to show the wifey what I found. I stood up and swung my detector back over the pot before filling it in... And to my surprise it rang again... I got back down on my knees and reached back in the pot and felt a big ass round thing... Pulled it out of the hole and almost crapped myself... 1882-S Morgan silver dollar... A little chewed up, but otherwise in pretty good shape considering...

I'm now sitting at home absolutely freaking out at what I found... I have to say... I am absolutely hooked...

Three beautiful old coins. Congrats.
You need to go back and pound that site. Can you imagine what may be locked away under the asphalt??

Congrats on the awesome hunt, :occasion14: I see 2 of my bucket listers in the pic. You sure are finding the goods with that F2. Welcome to the obsession, GL & HH

Wow, that is some way to start 2016,. Don't lose that horseshoe you carry.Three silvers with two of them being huge.

Very cool, Nice hunt, great permission! :-)

I know what you mean about the sudden onset of #2.... Didn't think it was a great feeling until I discovered metal detecting!

That is great testimonial for the F2. A few months ago I found an 1892 Barber Half with my F2 and literally shook all the way home.

I have been thinking about this property all afternoon, sadly there is now snow on the ground, but I got a pretty good grasp of the place... The building had a few massive additions to it over the years, the garden you see in the front is now all building.

There are 8 more of these massive trees, and around the front of the building is the original carriage house. This place, has been continuously occupied since the 1870s until recently. It is now for sale, will probably be reoccupied by the time spring comes back around. Today may have been my last chance to dig here though. Renovations will be done by spring and the place will be ready for a new owner... I won't know if I can dig again until I know the fate and ask permission. Maybe we will get an early thaw.

Congrats on a wonderful permission and an excellent achievement hunt. I am just a little envious but will have my windfall soon.....:laughing7:

Good score on the Morgan silver....sweet find.

Regards + HH

It just goes to show you. You don't have to shell out a gazillion bucks to consistently find treasure. Location is the number one factor imo.

It's definitely a great testimonial. Do you have the stock 8" coil or the DD??

I've never found a silver half (yet). I know I'll be shaking too when it happens.
And again, FTP makes some very affordable detectors that find great treasures.

I read about some kid in the UK who went on his very first hunt ever with a Garrett Ace 150 he bought for 119 bucks (or Euros, Lbs. or whatever). He found some hoard of viking treasure worth major money. Can you imagine that kind of beginner's luck??

So once again, it's not always how much you spend but HOW and WHERE you use the equipment you have.

I am running the 8" coil, I bought the $215 dollar kit that also came with the 4" sniper and the crappy pinpointer. I have actually been looking at the 11" DD lately. But $150 bucks is a tough pill to swallow when what Im really dreaming of is a ATPro. I just feel like I'm missing things and need a little more power.

The street I live on is 1890s original homes, 24 of them, dead end street, and 12 are abandoned and in serious decay. I don't have permission to hunt them per-se... But I have been maintaining the lawns and did all the cleanup for the last five years without ever so much as a peep from the shell corporation that apparently owns them... So I consider that permission... I am really only in the initial cleanup phase of this... And have already scored silver and gold... Coins and all kinds of cool stuff...

Next spring I want to be ready... That's why I'm thinking of the atpro... Probably keep the f2 I'm using now... And sell the f2 I bought the wife but she never used...

Look for a used coil on ebay. Just make sure you get the right one. Is yours a plug-in or screw on connector. I have seen these coils sell for $50 - $100. The 9" x 11" DD will get you more depth and you do not have to overlap your sweeps as much to maintain max depth. It is my preferred coil for most situations.

I Should also mention the pinpointer that comes with the detector is a real turd. I need to upgrade. I have found if you tweek the knob till right after the buzz stops, I can get about an inch out of it... It kinda helps, and I use it a lot...mbut it's kinda inconvenient...

The other thing sour my area is it was a gang haven in the 90s... I find shell casings and slugs all over the place... Probably won't be long before I dig up a gun...

Very nice silver finds! :occasion14:

I love finding the Morgans, never find enough of them!

I used the cheap pinpointer also but have since upgraded to the Deteknix Xpointer. What a differance.

I went from the Harbor Freight/Cen-Tech to the XPointer and you're right; what a difference.
I'll never go back.....
