Hey everyone - I detected an old ballfield in Newton MA today and found a very crusty 1870-something IHP - naturally, the last digit is barely visible (the '7' isn't very visible either!) Curious to hear from any IHP experts out there!

These are definitely one of my favorite coins to find (I know I'm not alone :-)

Thanks for looking!

I also thought you'd dug 187 IHP's :)
But a catchy title...It may be a 7 or a 9 from looking at the photos...I wonder if you can clean it up enough to see the faded # better...great find!

I’m sure there are better cleaning techniques
But what I’d do is soak it for a day in dish detergent, then very gently toothpick the coin.
Or if you more like me, get frisky and scrape the hell out of it with a toothpick.
Good luck and congrats on the find!

IHP's are always a welcome find (whether it be 1 or 187). Judging from your pics, I'm thinking that last digit will remain a mystery.

About a year ago I bought some Andres pencils , and used them on several crusty coins. They really do work, and dont damage the coin. I pulled a date from a Buffalo head nickel that I thought would never see. Try em...and nice find !

Thanks for looking everyone. I did scratch at the date with a bit with a variety of brushes and when bathed it in vinegar and making soda for a couple of minutes . I've found many IHP's but this was my first from the 70's which was exciting as I am week aware of the "king" of the Indians .

Happy hunting everyone!

Hard to tell, but when I get an Indian that's beat, I use Andre's pencils, just to try to get a date- usually works. I'd never use them on something that may be valuable though- they're not gentle...
