My father and I had the chance to hit a home here close to our home this past weekend. The home is under a major remodeling and now was the chance to obtain permission and we did. After talking to the owner, we found out the home was built in 1899 by a local politician/attorney. The original owner was a state representative. The house was built in 1899 and lumber from the family farm was used to handcraft the tongue and groove hardwood floors and ceilings. White cedar (possibly bought somewhere else) was the original siding but was covered in the 1950's with vinyl siding which preserved the original siding very well. Inside, there are several bedrooms, ornate trim, built in china cabinet, beautiful stair case and the original fireplace. The home was lived in until 2000, then it was transformed into a small cafe. Now the owners are attempting to restore it back to its original state (as close as possible) and use it for commercial purposes.
Part of the yard has been covered up with a pond, asphalt parking lot and a gravel lot on the back side of the home. There was some room to detect on the north and south sides though. The ground was very dry and we think the dryness might have affected the amount of depth our DFX's would go.
Upon entering the yard, dad went south and I took the northeast side. Immediately I had pulled out a wheat penny and I thought to myself this should be a good yard. Glancing back at my dad, he was constantly on his knees. Even though we truly do not care who finds the best or oldest find, there is a hidden competition that usually ends up with one of us razzing the other so seeing him dig lots of targets kept me swinging.
After all was said and done, it was an odd day really. On the south side, Dad found 26 coins and some odd ball stuff to my 12. But the south side of the house only produced one wheat penny (his other was found on my side later in the morning). And out of my 12, only two were newer. I even managed to pull out a '26 Merc and a '63 Silver Dime. The one 1919 Wheat Penny had been used for something other than money at one time with two precise holes in it.
To top it off, most of dads newer penny finds were all chewed up and looked as if they had been in acid or something.
Finding lots of wheat pennies and two silver dimes would normally indicate the possibility of even older and bigger coins but none were found this day. Maybe they are deeper. Most of the coins we found were less than 5" deep.
All in all, another great day detecting with my dad. Enjoy the pics......oh and I won the best finds of the day and the oldest coin!
