18th, 19th, and 20th century coins and relics

I wish I could say these finds are from one hunt, but they are from four or five searches of the same wooded area over the last couple weeks, with the most recent hunt being last night. The area once had houses per an 1870s map, but they are gone now. The hunting was tough with heavy overgrowth, modern trash, and bugs, and the findings were few, but they added up. Here are the highlights, in my opinion:

Colonial shoe buckle – I thought I had a bottle cap, and was pleasantly surprised by my first colonial shoe buckle, or at least I hope it’s colonial. It is plain and in good shape, though I think I separated the workings from the frame when I pulled it out of the hole. I doubt this is a reenactors buckle based on where I found it, but it is in suspiciously good shape.

Large Cent - I tried cleaning this coin with Andre Pencils to get a date, but I felt I was doing more harm than good, so I stopped. While not much to brag about, this is about the best large copper I have gotten in a long time (this is a generous photo).

Dozen buttons - My favorites are my first Dandy button with a pattern, a small flower-petal button, and a small flat button with gilt remaining.

Furniture draw pull plate - I have no idea of its age, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless, especially in the middle of the woods.

Coins - The obligatory wheat pennies and a nice Mercury, probably hunter drops.

I also dug about 50 shotgun shell headstamps. I have seen some posters refer to those as the pull tabs of the woods – so true!

We are fortunate here in Mass to seemingly have an endless array of finds- Congrats!

Thanks, Jeff. We are lucky in the Northeast in general, as you see so many good finds posted from upstate New York, western Pennsylvania, etc. Unfortunately, so much of my area is built up, so I am running out of spots. I have to work up the nerve to seek more permissions, though this pandemic makes that even more difficult, as I am trying to respect everyone's need for distance.

Steve I'd call that a great spot that you have. In the fall it will be so much easier to hunt! That is a really nice buckle. I never thought too much of them seeing them on here but once I found one it changed my mind completely the buckles are very cool especially the complete's like yours! I like the toy soldier too! Congrats on it all!

Thanks xcopperstax! I feel the same way. I was never excited about buttons, buckles, thimbles, spoons, etc., until I got into detecting. If my college drinking buddies could only see me now!
