Found this the other day while doing some gardening. It was maybe 6-8 inches down and absolutely covered in crud, so I'm not at all surprised with its extremely worn condition. (Especially considering it's over a century old. Who knows how long it was in the ground!) What is surprising though, however, is that odd "H" imprint on the right side. It's much larger than any mint marks I've seen, as well as any designer initials either, such as the V.D.B. on the 1909 version. All my searches on this so far have come up with nothing at all.
So, any ideas?
Maybe some guy back then just wanted to leave his initial on a circulating penny..sort of like you see today with ppl writing on paper dollars? That's my best guess. Any input will be much appreciated!

Congrats! That's a pretty sweet Wheatie!
Most of my old ones are toasted.
Looks to be a custom stamp. We did stuff like that when we were kids.
My neighbor had some neat tools and we use to do all sorts of things to coins. Holes, mustaches, earrings, words... don't think I have ever come across one again... would be cool if I did.

Somebody testing their new "H stamp on the cheapest piece of soft metal they had on hand. Unfortunately now it has destroyed the value of the cent to none other than 1¢.

Cents make good washers, too.

I know someone who has a muzzleloading smoothbore with a piece of Indian Head cent for the front blade sight.
