1911 Mercer Racerback Coin

[NCPeaches]

Found this in my creek today and wondering if anyone knows the story behind it. It's the same size as a quarter.

It's part of a set; similar to the game the Shell Oil company had; including instant winners.

PS: My recollection is they were randomly given out with each fill up --in the late 1960s.

Kewlies and thank you for the answer...now I will ask the locals what they may know about it since I wasn't living in this state during that time period. I have seen some remnants of old gas stations here and there in this area and betting it's part of them...the creek sure does have some interesting things surface when one is looking for other artifacts! ;-)

I have no doubt that a Sunoco gas station is or was located near you. They have 4,900 retail outlets in 23 states stretching from Maine to Florida and west to Indiana[FONT=myriad-pro, sans-serif].
