How much research do you want to do? This metal appears to have been made by Dieges and Clust. They sold out to Herff Jones in 1980. In turn, Herff Jones sold out to the Carnation Company. Soon thereafter, Herff Jones repurchased the company and today Herff Jones is a large company (3,000 employees) HQ-ed in Indianapolis. They are famous for making the Heisman Trophy, the "Indy" 500 winner's ring, the Super Bowl rings, etc. My point is, they may have archived records of your medal.

Here's a newspaper article about it -- it looks like "Jos. Distol, Marquette" was the 5th place finisher in that "marathon" race.
