1916 mercury dime

Let us see maybe we can make it out for you....:icon_thumleft:

Can't wait to see it was:-)

I have held it under a magnifying glass and every other idea I could come up with. I dug this up in my backyard, about 5 inches deep. I would consider this coin in very fine condition according to what I have been reading. It only appears to have a little dirt on it, and I don't want to try to clean it up anymore. Do you know if the 1916 no mint mark would have just a little blob where a mint marked coin should be? Everything else on this coin is very clear. I will take a picture of it the best I can, maybe someone on here can tell. This coin has been buried here for at least 22 years since I bought the house.

congratz Debbie on the fine . just a few days ago found a 1908 dime 15inches down in the ground

The mark or whatever it is, looks off orientation to me to be a valid mint mark. Better focus would be nice.

It doesn't look like an S and the mark is where the mint mark should be. I hope you found a real one! See if you can get a better picture of the back.

Hope it's a D!! Better pictures of the back would be great.

took pics with the phone app. not very clear. I'll try again. I also think the mark is a little low...but one never knows! It's just odd that there is a mark there at all if it is not a mint mark.

Hi Debbie56; The Mint Mark is located on the back of the coin to the left side of the Pisces as you look at it ok. A better focus on the picture sure would help. Good Luck. PEACE:RONB

Silver holds up very well in the ground. It needs to have the dirt carefully removed, maybe by soaking in soapy water or something NOT abrasive. I'll leave the correct methods to the experts but removing the dirt certainly can't hurt if done properly.

I've heard never to clean coins with soap, but maybe very very gently getting it off with a toothpick?

Whatever the case, that is in excellent shape for a 1916 merc. Half the ones from the '40s I've dug don't look as nice.

Based on what? The picture of the reverse is barely clear enough to make out what kind of coin it is in the first place, let alone a mint mark.
