Does anyone have any background on these coins and their minting? The edges have jagged pieces as if they were cut from a larger sheet of metal, but not refined like most coins I've come to know.

The coin is a 1942 --20 centovos piece with a silver fineness of .720 (as shown). The mintage was 12,460,000 and the weight 3.333 grams. The edge is milled and the diameter should be 19 mm. It is the most common from the series 1920-1943. The metal pieces 180 degrees apart may have been soldered on as part of a clasp or similar attachment.

It will have no cash value. Mexico changed to the New Peso in 1993, leaving anyone with the old pesos (who did not exchange)with only worthless coins. It only has value to collectors. Much like European currencies when they changed to the Euro. Marks, Franks etc, have no value.
