I recently started going through a leather pouch with pennies. I ran across this one, 1961 Steel (magnet picks it up), has some rust on one edge, but very clearly stamped. Any idea what it is or its worth?

I have a 60s one silvery colored, sticks to stong rare earth magnet. Was in with some coins my dad collected as a kid. I read it was a thing to nickel plate them as science experiments. Nickel the metal is attracted to a magnet field. Or it's a penny struck on wrong planchet? That would be cool and $$$.

Looks to me like it Has a ring of Metal (tin Maybe) around it.
Perhaps Maybe originally was on a Loop or inserted in a fob Type Item

Very interesting. I dug a penny the other day that had rust around the edge, but it was a zincoln.
Thanks for the post,

Here’s the one I dug the other day. I thought it was a Zincoln, but it’s a 1982 which shows as the same composition as yours. First rusty penny I’ve ever dug.

I agree that it looks like there is a metal ring around this penny. If that's the case, the diameter should be slightly larger.
So it's bezeled then like those coin necklaces. I wonder why? There's not really any way in it present form to wear it or hanging it from anything.

It's a 61 the year Kennedy was inaugurated.
It could have been Inserted in some type of keepsake

Jewelerguy totally right.
It was a magic trick, hide a dime beneath the penny. Present it to the spectator as merely a penny. First you say "hocus pocus". Then wave the mysterious magic block over it (which has a magnet concealed inside) The penny sticks to the bottom of the block exposing the dime beneath.... and you just turned a penny into a dime and amazed your friends. Tah dah! Until you accidentally lose the special penny. Lol.
The magic box had a little square of felt attached so one couldn't hear the penny "click" as it was picked up by the magnet.
