2 cent piece, stamped face, blank back. What is this?

I've never seen anything like that before. My only thought was love token. I'm only familiar with small silver coins (or gold) being used as love tokens, but not copper coins.

The first step to making one is to smooth one side of the coin, prior to engraving a name or monogram on it.
