I met up with Keith from www.coinhunting.net on Wednesday and found 10 coins and went back to the same place with him and Greg on Thursday and found 3 more coins.

This is the kind of place you love and hate. You love it because when you do get a signal it is usually a coin, and an old one at that. But you could easily go the entire day now without getting a signal there. I honestly doubt that I would go back unless they decided to plow the field.

It's a shame how stained these silver coins came out, but I would rather find stained silver than no silver at all!

I finished the 2 days there with the following:

4 No date Shield Nickels
3 Indian Heads (1884, 87, 92)
1866 Nickel 3-Cent with a hole in the top
3 Seated Dimes (1845, 76CC, 91)
2 Silver 3-Cents (1851, 54)

Brian...very nice finds...isn;t it funny that when you are on a site plug full of trash you silently wish that you would get nothing but coin signals...then when you get to a site that is just that, you realize how boring it can be not getting a signal for hours...:( Nice job on the 3 cent silvers...those are hard to come by!!

Yeah, it's odd how I hate trash, but then at a site like this I am just left wishing that there was some trash there to dig to pray that something was there masking the targets. But when you grid out an entire acre and don't get a single signal it really takes away your motivation.

Yeah, the 3 centers are tough to get. I dug 3 this year, all from this single spot.

Wow Brian, nice finds!

What kind of a site is it that someone/two can go there and find only old coins over and over?
Did it used to be some kind of county fair grounds or somthing?

It was a campground from the 1850s until the 1890s or so. Then we believe that it was moved to another location because all of the coins just stop in 1892. So now we have to do our research to find where it was moved to, if it was moved at all.

First off Brian - Awesome finds! I wouldn't hesitate to use some silver cleaner on a couple of those.
That is neat to find shield nickels, IH's, Seated, and such. Worth hunting all day for one of those silver coins. I'd even take a dateless shield nickel as I have yet to find one. ;D

Just last week I hunted a very similar place in Ohio - campground used from 1850's to about 1900. Same thing - go all day with only a couple signals - shell casing, seated dime, IH. You really have to be metally prepared for these sites. Not for the faint of heart. 8)

You are 100% correct on being mentally prepared to hunt a site like this. The first day I was enjoying myself, but by noon of the 2nd day I just couldn't handle it anymore and hunted a few more hours and had to call it a day.

AWESOME coins there Brian!!

I'd love to hunt more areas like that! So much history is those coins.

I'd camp out there for a weekend.

10 to 20 seconds of electrolysis may solve the staining, but no more than that.

I've thought about that, but right now I don't want to risk it. Especially since the 91 and 76CC are pretty high grade. XF or better on each one.
