Only got out for about 2 hours this morning. Kind of got a late start and I want to watch the NY Giants game at 1:00 so I cut it short. I hunted from about 9:00 to 11:00 AM.
I put the 3x6 shooter coil on the DFX today to see if I could get a little closer to the corn stalks. Not 5 minutes after i put it on I got a beautiful quarter hit on the DFX. Solid unwavering 85 VDI. Depth was only a half inch, so I was skeptical. I figured beer can because most of them were hitting in this range. Needless to say I was happy when this sucker popped out. :o ;D

Here is a picture of todays finds. My brother found the shovel type object. This must date back a ways because I've never seen one. My brother also found the lead sinker in the picture. I found the button. That is button #58 from this site. The large copper boosts my total from the site to 7 1/2. I'm going to try to get out again tomorrow. I have the day off.

Here are pics. obverse and reverse of the large cent. It appears to be a braided hair variety. 1847. Thanks for looking. Sorry about the brief post. Giant game is on in 3 minutes. ;D ;D

Re: 2 hour hunt..........Large Copper.

Nice Copper. That "shovel" type object you are referring to looks somewhat like a curry comb. I have one that I found in a Union civil war camp. They were used to brush the cavalry horses..
If the other side is solid than it isnt one, but if the other side looks like the pic below, than it may be. Here is an example:

Iron Curry Comb

Remains of a curry comb excavated from a
U.S. cavalry camp in Stafford, Va. The camp,
located across the Rappahannock River from
Fredericksburg, was occupied during the winter
of 1862-1863. Four and one half by three and
three quarters inches.

Thanks for the info Sentinel. My brother will be pleased to know.. as am I. Can you give me an approximate date on this object. Are we talking mid 1800's here?:

I haven't done much to this one yet. I soaked it in peroxide for about 20 minutes but it still needs some work. I'll probably put it in olive oil for a while but I heard that is bad on a recent post. Any ideas anyone? This seems like it's in good shape so I dont want to screw it up.

Heck yeah, bro! That is a nice coppa! You were probably digging one while I dug one. You're a kicka$$ coppa dude, too. I don't think anyone else can compete with you, me, PACO, and zoy. :D

Giants are definitely a threat now! Go Steelers! :o :D

Thanks for the reply Zoy. If you hadn't detected like superman and found three coppas the other day, I might still be ahead of you. LMAO ;D

I agree Mirage. That's why I haven't done anything to it yet. The last large cent I found I made the mistake of running under some water. It just flaked away. I was lucky to even get a date off of it.

VERY nice large Cent! WTG!!! WOOHOO!!!!
