2 strange knobs

Found these 2 knobs in the same hole. This would be a first for me. Does anyone have any idea what they are? I found them next to an 1800s saw mill. DSC00046.JPGDSC00047.JPG

I bet they fit on either side of the wooden handle. That way they would both face either toward the back of the handle or toward the blade.
 

the only thing I can find close, was on a tobacco cutter which would be rare, but they were together so what you guys said makes sense.cool find any how .thanks for reply.
 

Kind of looks Asian....like the chi chi dragons that protect a house from bad spirits. One has its mouth open the other has its mouth closed.....but it also looks like a fox.

The first seems to be a match its info was Antique honey horn button wolf head design Paris back.But I am by no means a button guy got lucky.
