Over the past couple of weeks I searched $200 in pennies and here is what I came up with. 46 king George VIs, 26 wheats (oldest 1936), and 3 king George Vs. The king George V pennies were 1935, 1932 and a very nice 1922 with the low mintage of 1,243,635 :hello2: That is the third lowest mintage of the Canadian small cents. I needed the 1922 for my small cent collection because I didn't feel like paying a dealer $20 for the coin. Now I only need a 1923 and then my collection will be complete. When I was at the bank yesterday I placed an order for 12 boxes of pennies ($300). Hopefully that comes with in the next week as I have the week off. Better yet, hopefully I find a 1923 in that $300.
I took pics of the 1922 along with some enders with my cell. When I take pics with my camera apparently the files are too big but I guess cell pics work fine.

I am an american living in las vegas but I collect canadian pennies also. I have some george V's. I bought a bag of canadian pennies 1921-1951 on ebay. It was mostly george VI's. About 3 pounds of old canadian copper pennies for $12. I would like to buy a large canadian penny without spending a lot of money. Large american pennies are expensive also.

Wow, amazing volume my friend. You are doing good thing, culling old pennies while they still circulate. 200$ means you've gone through 8 boxes. That is a massive volume.
How do you find that much time to search? For me even 4 boxes a week is almost a limit. That is a key date for sure, last week I also found a 1935 KG V and was quite happy with that find. Looks like you wheat average is about 3 per box. Am I correct? Just want to compare the occurrence rate of wheat pennies in various locations.
Love to see your pics, they inspire me to keep searching no matter what. Keep it up!

How do I find the time? Well I use weekends to my advantage as best I can. Last weekend I had four boxes, I searched two by myself then my friend helped me search the other two. The weekend prior to that I searched $50 in pennies and last sunday night I searched another box and just last night I searched another box, totalling up to $200. Oh and more good news, when I was walking back to my house after picking up the coins I searched last sunday night I found a $10 on the ground. The wheat average is correct but the break down is a little skewed as in one box I only found one wheat but in another I found 8. As previously mentioned I have this week off of school so I will have plenty of time to search coins.

How long is your spring break? Mine lasts until today. Sorry for being off topic. (Great finds, by the way{only Canadian penny not in my collection is a KGV small cent}).

Congrats on your finds, especially the KG Vs. I am going to Windsor tomorrow and plan to buy $200 in pennies. The time is now to search penny boxes!!
In 2013, it will be all about how many tellers to do know. One will need to have tellers holding on to pennies as the come in for you search.

You couldn't be more right about the time is now. Thats a good plan going to Windsor. I already have a few tellers who call me when they get old coins/bills in so I am hoping they will save pennies for me when that time comes. I am planning sometime right before the penny is withdrawn to just go out and buy 10-20 boxes and then to just stash them away for the future, incase I want to search pennies after they are withdrawn.

I'll preface my suggestion with the comment that I am NOT as familiar with Canadian penny sorting as U.S. cent sorting. That said, you might be able to increase your volume by buying/building a sorter using a Coin Mechanisms Inc. (CMI) coin comparitor. The sorter can be as simple as a cookie sheet with a comparitor attached to one end all the way up to a Ryedale sorter. Comparitors are relatively inexpensive and cookie sheets, or something similar, are easily obtainable. Total cost for the cookie sheet contraption could easily be under $20US. New Ryedale would be $350US and up.

I have Rube Goldberg'd two sorters from slot machine parts, each of which can sort upwards of 300 pennies/minute. These are the result, in part, to help received from members of this forum, ESPECIALLY madwest, and other forums I prowl. When the dust finally settled the cost for each was $70-$80US.

As a way of giving back to this forum because of the help and info I've received I'll be happy to try and help you rig up some kind of sorter so you can increase your volume. If you decide to go the sorter route I can, at the very least, tell you what DOESN'T work. Trust me, I've found a lot of "doesn'ts."

I agree with the general thought "sort as many Canadian pennies as you can...NOW", because their availability will dwindle over the coming years.
