If it's a raised surface, I'd keep it and have it graded and slabbed. If it's scratched into the surface, it was probably caused from a coin rolling or vending machine and isn't worth anything over face value.

Yeah, it is incised into the face. The curious thing is, it is the exact same width as the rim bands on the backs of these quarters.

Appears to me that it's a damaged coin from the end of a roll. The crimper scratched the coin. Common occurrence.
