MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) - It's as hands-on learning as one can get. After a day with their fingers in the dirt, a group of Messiah College students had learned that unearthing anything, at all, is just about as good as striking gold.

The group was huddled in the back left corner of a Mechanicsburg cemetery . Nearly 250 years ago, William Trindle donated those very burial grounds to German Lutherans.

The archeological history students were assisted by Messiah College professor Dr. David Pettegrew and kept company by several congregation members of the Trindle Spring Lutheran Church.

As is the case with most excavations, all parties were looking for proof of something that cannot be seen on the surface.

In this case, they are hoping to prove the existence of an 18th century building that, according to folk-lore, served as the church's original structure.
