Time for another 1 day holiday, spent 7.5 hours hunting with Dad on a Wheat Stubble Field that we had a little go on Sunday. The hawkers had cleared a lot off this early Roman Site but they missed a few bits
I had 5 Roman Coins & 2 Hammered with Dad playing catch up (as usual :-X ), but he stuck one to me with an amazing Ambonate 2nd Century Brooch. :o It was near a spade depth deep & he nearly gave up thinking it would be junk like the rest of his digs :D

Masive Medieval Lead Button, never seen one like it :-\
6 Jettons
Roman Nail Cleaner
Roman Buckle
Roman Belt Slide
Tudor Clothes fastener
Buckles

Had a troop of 3 kids following us at one point, Dad dug the biggest Iron Key I have seen, nearly the total length of my hand. We gave it to the kids to fight over, probably Victorian for a Church door :-\

The above link shows the best Brooch(out of focus sorry) I had with a pin, its a much rarer type but has hardly any enamel left. So your right, its near impossible in a constantly ploughed field to get pin & enamel left. We will probably never better it. Won't stop us trying
Super little Brooch Spoke wheel design. I had one very similar, also with the pin, and Enamaling

Great brooches, all of them :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

Cru, was the vanity item (a nail cleaner) found far from the brooch? You know, sometimes they were attached to brooches.

Well you both had great finds, although the Ambonate brooch is just wonderful, that is really a nice find. Good you gave the key to the kids, over 10 years you will have more competition....

Many kids & adults we met want to detect until they actually try it.
until now the only people the village have seen is those looking over their shoulder in the darkening evenings. :tongue3:
Well you are 100% correct there

It was in the same general area, but that was due to the fact we were at the heart of the site. The brooch you are thinking of is a Chatelaine type which once again is in the same family as this one (I have found 1 years ago, minus the ear picks etc..)
Notice mine has a loop which a chain & pin attached to, so as to double secure it, as it must have been treated as a valueable item at the time & worth protecting from loss.
