So my brother calls me last weekend and asks me if the kids want to go make apple cider at his friend's house. Before saying yes, my first question was of course "how old is his house?" "Old....." says my brother. "We'd love to come over!", I replied.
By the end of the day, the guy said to come back whenever I want and hunt the place. It's about a 1 acre yard but I don't know how much is undisturbed since the earliest part of the house was built in 1723. Anyway, got a chance to hit it this afternoon with good results. In addition to the Indians and large cents, I got about 15 wheaties. Where the heck is the silver at this place? IHPs are 1882, 1883 and 1889. Largies are 1835 and 1840-something I believe.
I'm really hoping for an early one from this location. The button is really cool and I've never found one like it. Anyone have thoughts on age?

and will you be taking off work tomorrow to go back??

The large cent on the right is of the Matron head style, so is most likey 18 teens or 18 twenties.

Thanks so much letting me know. I have a growing pile of British coppers from 1694 to 1804, and have yet to snag an early large cent. I didn't even look at the variety - just figured it was late. I would love to take the day off tomorrow but duty calls! Hopeful over the holiday weekend next week I can get free and do some diggin'.

Nice finds! Cool LC's. I'm in a large cent drought for 2015 with not much time left to spare. Well, keep finding them!
Congrats. HH

So was I, DD. Thought I'd never find another. Keep pushing buddy - you'll break through.

Although I think I'd take your USA button over 98% of the large cents out there (chain cent excluded)!

Was wondering if that is not a custom made bridal rosette and not a button. But definitely shows age.

Sound like you found a virgin site. Congrats on pulling all those keepers. 2 LCs and 3 IHPs in one hunt are awesome digs for one hunt. Congrats on securing that great permission.

Thanks LD. I am optimistic due to the size of the place, but so far the old stuff is basically in one area. The dirt closest to the house is so loamy the wheats are at six inches. Psyched to go back for sure but I don't like to do yards too much as winter approaches since the grass is dormant with the heavy frost this morning. A few brown circles and that permission could dry up quick!

Thanks for the ID on that. I know nothing about rosettes but there does not appear to be any kind of shank or remnant of one. I'll have to learn about those! Awesome hobby!

Great finds DW,
What is the size of the button?
Like a quarter? Don't believe its a rosette. Looks like a big custom dandy button.

Great button. I would date it in the 1780-90s. Maybe as late as 1810.

Nice "open work" button and the coins are great too!!!

Massive. Bigger than a silver dollar. I should have put something next to it for reference.

Very nice digs! Congrats on the sweet coins!

With a site dating to 1723, I'm positive there's more in that ground than what you found. If you found a couple large cents right away, I suspect there's deeper, older targets masked by surface clutter. Clear that out and find that flowing hair or capped cent! Congrats and good luck

I'm hoping your right, brother. I got that older one narrowed to 1817 or so based on the weird (and highly unattractive) jawline on lady liberty, so DB or FH might not be far behind. I'm dying for one of those. I don't know if they were metallurgically different, but a lot of the DB's posted on T-net hold up remarkably well.

Nice finds, a largie is one that's on my bucket list. Lots of great history up your way.

DW that's a beautiful late 18th century open work dandy. Looks like a great spot buddy.

Those cut steel "openwork" buttons date from the 1770s to about 1800, so late 1700s should be pretty accurate. Nice find.
