Hey Gang,

Bought a map book the other day to see what parks & schools neighboring towns & cities have. After looking at the numbers, I decided that if a city has 53+ parks and 42+ schools it must be a place I want to detect!!!!

Turns out that most of the tot lots were really dinky and the wood chips were hard and old so most of the digging was deep. Amazingly I didn't find any jewelry...except for one of those sandal medallion things and a broken ring (which I threw away).

Hit the first tot lot at 8:10 this morning...the temperature was about 47 or so then. It warmed up later in the day to about 60 or so. Hit the last tot lot about 8 tonight and finished (or rather quit around dark).

Around the noon hour I was happily detecting a tot lot near the downtown area and had picked up 6 dimes, 4 nickels and 11 pennies. I was still working the structures and had not gotten to the swings yet when the tot lot was invaded by...you guessed it...rug rats, curtain climbers and their adult keepers. There must have been 30 of them...I couldn't get to the car fast enough!

In one of the parks I found a woman's purse laying on the ground; every compartment empty. I would love to know the story behind that! I picked it up and placed it on the bench. Later I thought, "I left my fingerprints on that purse!" What a dumb a$$!

Only one of the parks was a good producer...12 Quarters, 19 dimes, 6 nickels and 23 pennies. I did hit three school tot lots later in the day; they produced better than most of the park lots did. All told I hit 16 separate tot lots today. One of the city parks produced absolutely nothing! Very unusual not to find even one penny...was it visited before I got there? Who knows...but that was a waste of time; I could have hit an extra school tot lot instead and maybe gotten a larger total.

Total coins - 349. Composed of: 212 pennies (58 copper and 154 zinc); 43 nickels; 65 dimes; and 29 quarters. Total $18.02 (a new record for me). The M6 has been deadly on dimes lately. Got home about 10 tonight. Oh yeah, I found 2 pairs of sunglasses too. One pair looks to be the perfect size for my 2 year old grandson!

The pennies would not all fit on the scanner so I'm just throwing the copper ones in their jar and the zinc ones in their coffee can. I'm a bit tired so I'll close this post out and maybe hit the hay...assuming that the M6 beeping in my brain stops long enough for me to go to sleep! I plan to hit that city on a weekend and hit only the school tot lots...I believe the take will be worthwhile.

Hope everyone is finding time to get out there & pick up some buried treasure! Happy hunting everybody! :icon_pirat:

It is quite possible that the city dug up the old chips and replaced them too as the chips were relatively new. There were lots of beat-up aluminum circles with numbers on them buried in the chips...seems like if a detectorist had beat me there he/she would have pulled them out. I'm guessing that those circles were something from the lumber company that made the chips.

Hey Rae, thanks for the enthusiastic reply! The squashed penny says: Moon Landing July 20, 1969. The M6 is starting to love those dimes!!

It was all clad! Early in the day I passed a few elementary schools and they looked great. By the time the kids got out of school & cleared out it was too late in the day to hit many of them that's why I only hit three of them. I have always found more jewelry items at the schools. :tongue3:

You are correct, it is an auto round. Don't it make ya wonder why we find so many bullets in the parks? I also found 3 spent 22 cal. rounds.

HH,

Yep, I know that quite well Nat (found 70 rings last year & 12 so far this year, unless I count the broken one I found yesterday...naw, it's in the trash). I was really surprised at the lack of jewelry items in that many digs. :icon_scratch:

Dang, I'll bet your glad for clad. Good job.

How many pulltabs did you dig to get all those nickels? That's an impressive bunch of coins there.

Are you sure it doesn't say 1969? That would be quite a collectible if the date was an error!

Nat

Nice job prober. I agree with Nat....if you keep diggin' all those nickel hits...you're bound to get a ring. Me...I'm too lazy and concentrate on the deep silver hits ::)
